When mixing a band, there is a simplen 5-step EQ workflow to help create a well-defined, clear and present mix.

  1. Establish a strong signal to noise ratio; making sure instruments and vocals are properly miked and mixer preamp gains are all set in their most optimal position.
  2. Filter out unnecessary frequencies. Your high pass filter is your best friend here.
  3. Contour the sound of each instrument with parametric EQ.
  4. Focus on where everything is sitting in the overall mix. Additional EQ adjustments are made allowing each element of the mix to shine in their own space in the frequency spectrum.
  5. If the song has vocals, then vocals take precedence. Make further EQ adjustments allowing the vocals to stand out.
